She’s Finished (Well, for now!)

So, I’ve pretty much finished the portrait quilt from my class with Esterita Austin in Houston at the Quilt Festival last month. I’m too scared to quilt her face, so I’m not even sure if I’ll do it. I’ll probably come back to her early next year and decide for sure what I want to do about the quilting. I’ll probably quilt the background, as well, just so it’s not so flat.

I never could get her mouth like I wanted it, and I kept trying to get her not to look so sad, but that’s just who she is, I guess :-)

Comments are welcome, as always!

And don’t forget to leave a comment on the previous post to be entered into the giveaway for a 6-month membership to The Quilt Show!

Wow. I don't think she's sad...I think she looks determined...pensive...thoughtful, but not sad!

I know exactly what you mean about quilting the face...I struggle every time and yet if I don't quilt it a lot, then after a while the face needs a face lift...so I suggest maybe making a prototype, or photocopying it onto some fabric (or something) and try quilting...maybe even just painting it on, then quilting it in a couple of ways so you get comfortable with it.

Nicely done. :)

Really like your portrait quilt. I think it is very sophisticated and intriguing.

Thank you, Linda. Lisa--what a scathingly brilliant idea to copy it onto fabric and do a test!!! I love it!

Michele -- she is fabulous! wow, I am very impressed. the colors you've used as so bold and they work very well. perhaps when you quilt the rest, the face won't need quilting? I have no personal experience in this, but I can understand your angst! well done.

What an incredible piece of art. I think faces are so challenging on so many levels. I always admire those artists who jump right in and do the quilting...I think the quilting enhances the piecing, so I wish you luck.

I agree that she doesn't look sad but rather thoughtful. She is really concentrating on something in the distance.
